Why The Giants Shouldn’t Fire Brian Daboll

Coach Brian Daboll

The New York Giants came into his season with questions surrounding their most important position, quarterback. Head Coach Brian Daboll would be entering his third season with former top-ten pick, Daniel Jones at the helm of the Giants’ offense. Jones would be returning from an ACL injury he suffered last season, but truthfully last season wasn’t going to be good for Jones anyway.

This season was supposed to be the year the Giants confirmed if they made the right choice paying Daniel Jones and keeping him as their starter. So far, the returns haven’t been great. The Giants have had one of the worst offenses in the NFL and Jones has often been the culprit behind that, whether it be missing wide-open receivers or just turning the ball over in key situations.

Giants Should Keep Brian Daboll

The Giants hired Brian Daboll away from the Buffalo Bills where he served as offensive coordinator. Daboll was a crucial part in developing Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen into being one of the best in the league. In Daboll’s final year with the Bills, Allen passed for over 4,400 yards and 36 touchdown passes. Daboll had the Bills’ offense clicking, with Allen playing at MVP-caliber levels and constantly being a prime playoff team.

The issue with New York isn’t entirely on the head coach, the quarterback has to be able to execute the plays called. Jones has consistently missed open receivers, either just not looking at them or throwing it over their heads. To make matters worse, Giants GM Joe Schoen decided to let star running back Saquon Barkley leave and go to divisional rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley wasn’t just the best Giants player, but one of the best players in the NFL and he’s proving that this year with the Eagles.

However, New York did finally add a true number-one receiver in last year’s NFL Draft. Malik Nabers out of LSU has proven to be a star in the making. Nabers quickly became one of Jones’ favorite targets, but even with the addition of Nabers the Giants have continued to struggle to put up points on a consistent basis. If Nabers was able to have a quarterback that could consistently get him the ball in space, this offense could be thriving.

What The Giants Should Do Moving Forward

The Giants should retain Brian Daboll as their head coach for at least one more season. However, the Giants brass also needs to admit they made a mistake and trade away or release quarterback Daniel Jones. If the season ended today New York holds the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, with the Jacksonville Jaguars at number one. The Jaguars won’t be drafting a quarterback, so Daboll and Schoen would have their pick of whichever prospect they desired most.

Some names to keep an eye on would be Longhorns’ QB Quinn Ewers, Alabama product Jalen Milroe, as well as Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. The Giants could also elect to sign a veteran signal caller or make a trade for a more experienced quarterback. It’s hard to imagine Derek Carr won’t be available this off-season, and maybe the Seahawks are ready to move on from Geno Smith.

What the Giants should do is give Daboll the chance to work with a legit starting caliber quarterback before deciding to fire him. Jones is not a starter in the NFL, he’s proven it time and time again. Daniel Jones will most likely finish his time in the NFL as a career backup. Daboll has proven he can run a prolific offense with the right quarterback under center. The Giants should strongly consider a quarterback change before any coaching change is made.
