Premier League issues statement amid controversial tackle in Tottenham vs Fulham
A team can only lose to Fulham at home after defeating Manchester City at the Etihad and then settle for a draw in
the Premier League. Naturally, Tottenham is that team. Spurs are now three points behind Brighton and five behind
Chelsea and Arsenal, but the outcome maintains them within striking distance of the top four. When the Premier
League released a statement on Tom Cairney’s late red card against Spurs, things became more serious. The Fulham
midfielder was sent off in the final seconds of the game after earlier scoring an incredible equaliser.
Following Brennan Johnson’s debut in North London, Tottenham had consolidated their position and climbed to
sixth place. But with twenty-five minutes left, Fulham equalised thanks to a spectacular equaliser from Cairney.
However, Cairney’s bravery soon gave way to annoyance as referee Darren Bond was advised by VAR officials Craig
Pawson and Ian Hussin to reconsider his choice to just award a yellow card. The rationale behind the review
procedure was later explained by the Premier League Match Centre’s X account.
Horror tackle made on Kulusevski
The Premier League deemed Tom Cairney’s tackle on Dejan Kulusevski as ‘serious foul play’ after Tottenham were
granted a late opportunity to secure a winner against Fulham on Sunday. Although initially shown a yellow card by
referee Darren Bond, Cairney was sent off after a VAR review.
Cairney’s studs ripped along Kulusevski’s right Achilles during his challenge, a last-ditch effort to win the ball,
requiring the Tottenham winger to be replaced shortly after. Timo Werner took Kulusevski’s position, but he was
powerless to change the outcome of the match, which finished in a draw.
In the last ten minutes, Tottenham was unable to take advantage of having an extra man. After squandering the
opportunity to build on their victory over Manchester City last weekend, they will try to recover against
Bournemouth on Thursday night. As they are ready to play his old team next, Spurs will need to reevaluate their
strategy and rely on Dominic Solanke’s return.
