Derek Ferguson believes Cyriel Dessers does not meet Rangers’ criteria and should not start ahead of Hamza Igamane.
Igamane was selected over Dessers for the Europa League match against Nice on Thursday (November 28), and he seized the opportunity.
The 22-year-old scored twice and assisted another, and hopes to preserve his position for the Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone on Sunday (1 December).
Ferguson, a former Gers player, told Ibrox News that Dessers’ performance has caused anger among fans. He gives it his best, but does he meet the standards needed of Rangers? I do not think so.
“Igamane got his opportunity against Nice and scored a few goals, but his entire performance was excellent.
“He was vibrant, active, and didn’t leave the opponent alone; the crowd appreciated his performance, as did I.
“I would have thrown him in earlier, but he’s been given his chance and seized it. So I believe he should start this weekend.”
Cyriel Dessers faces a period out of Rangers’ squad.
The decision to remove Dessers was startling on the surface, but it made perfect sense from Philippe Clement’s point of view.
The ugly fact is that, while Dessers tops the club’s scoring statistics this season, he wastes far too many opportunities and disappears in far too many games.
