Live: Rogers industrial fire sends plume of dark smoke into the air

“We continue to urge people, especially those susceptible to respiratory problems, to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed,” according to the firefighters.

Rogers, Arkansas — On October 16, a fire at an industrial building in Rogers launched a plume of dark smoke into the air, visible for miles. According to the Rogers Fire Department (RFD), the fire started at Marck Industries, a recycling and trash management company at 3507 N Arkansas St., around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Everyone in the building was evacuated.

Although it began as a 3-alarm fire, Don Lisi, public information officer for the Rogers Public Department (RPD), acknowledged that it was a 4-alarm structural fire.

According to Lisi, two persons were injured, with one sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The fire service acknowledged that a hazardous smoke warning had been issued to residents near the fire.

The warning stated that children, the elderly, and others with respiratory difficulties should seek shelter or shelter in place.

“We continue to urge people, especially those susceptible to respiratory problems, to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed,” said the fire service.

The fire was responded to by about ten agencies. To aid in putting out the fire on Wednesday, the aiding organisations sent 90 loads totalling 270,000 gallons of water. To cut the fire break, Arkansas Forestry brought a bulldozer.

Almost six hours after the fire is thought to have begun, Lisi said that it had been controlled to a “manageable area.”

Five trucks will be used by the fire department to monitor nightly, according to Lisi. Before it is put out, he thinks the fire will burn for a few days at the very least. What might be burning inside the structure and how the fire started have not been disclosed by officials.
