Imran Khan is not on the list of 38 candidates for Chancellor, according to an Oxford University press release, despite Khan’s intention to run.
The University declared that applications were evaluated purely based on four exclusion criteria. Three of them do not apply to Khan: they cannot be University students or employees, nor can they be members or candidates for elected legislature. The fourth criterion specifies that the candidate cannot be “disqualified from being a charity trustee by virtue of section 178 of the Charities Act 2011” and must be a “fit and proper person” as determined by His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs.
Persons convicted of “an offence, not specified in section 178A, that involves dishonesty or deception” were barred from serving on Charities Act committees. Khan has not been convicted of any section 178A offences, which include bribery and terrorism.
Khan’s advisor, Sayed Bukhari, told Cherwell, “It’s quite disappointing to see Oxford University make this unjustified choice. Imran Khan is legally eligible to run in the election. Oxford University has wasted an opportunity to be a global trendsetter. Lawyers have questioned the university for its reasons. On behalf of Imran Khan, I wish all candidates the best of luck in their campaigns and elections.
When Cherwell asked the University specific exclusion criteria Khan was disqualified for, the spokesman declined to say.
Khan, Pakistan’s former prime minister, is currently on detention in prison after being charged with corruption during his tenure.
