Newcastle United ‘accept’ offer for the third most used player of the Eddie Howe era

Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron has an uncertain future at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are allegedly open to accepting an offer for former Eddie Howe favourite Miguel Almiron in the January transfer window.

Almiron has only played 30 minutes of Premier League football this season and has fallen behind fellow wingers Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Jacob Murphy in recent months.

According to Football Insider, the Paraguayan international has been widely linked with a move away from St James’ Park in both of the last two transfer windows, and is no longer considered a part of Howe’s long-term plans.

Mick Brown, a former Manchester United, Sunderland, and West Ham United scout, told the source that the 30-year-old is likely to leave the North East to help bankroll a new signing in his position.

Brown responded, “Yes, that’s one I’ve heard they’re wanting to do and close a deal on. Under Eddie Howe, he no longer plays a regular role for their squad. He was always a bit of a bright spot, and he looks electrifying at times, but he’s not consistent or efficient enough to play frequently at the highest level. They’ve decided to move him on.

“They already have people who can cover for him, but any compensation they receive for him will most likely be reinvested in the position. That right-hand side is undoubtedly an issue for them, and they will want to raise funds from Almiron’s sale to circumvent those financial regulations. Allowing Almiron to leave frees up that money to spend.

Almiron joined to St James’ Park from Atalanta United in the MLS to much fanfare in January 2019, shattering the club’s all-time transfer record, which had been held by Michael Owen for more than 12 years. Rafael Benitez’s final signing struggled to get off to a good start in front of goal, but he was praised in his first six months for instilling a spirit of energy and excitement in the team that had been lacking previously.

Despite only scoring eight goals and three assists over the next two seasons, he and Allan Saint-Maximin were regarded as one of the team’s key threats pushing forward due to their scorching pace and great work ethic.

In the 2022/23 campaign as Newcastle finished fourth, fans finally saw the best of Almiron as he fired in a solid return of 11 goals and four assists across all competitions. He notably scored the club’s first goal in the Champions League for 20 years against PSG en route to a famous victory but struggled to produce the same productivity in the season prior with just three goals and one assist in the league.

With 112 games in three seasons, Almiron is the Howe era’s third most used player, and one he has clearly prized during his tenure with the club. However, given FFP limits and the team’s aim to recover a spot in Europe, a sale is expected in the near future.

Everton and Charlotte FC have apparently expressed interest in the winger, while Saudi side Al Shabab were reportedly turned down in January after failing to reach Almiron’s £30 million price tag.
