Daniel Farke suffers overnight Leeds United blow ahead of crucial Sheffield United showdown

With the international break over, all eyes are on Friday night’s visit of Sheffield United to Elland Road in a crucial Championship match for Leeds United.

The Championship schedule is about a fourth of the way through the 2024-25 season, with Friday’s offering the first of game week 10. Leeds presently sits in fifth place, having lost only one game.

That occurred against Burnley, but they should have more points after drawing with Sunderland the previous game. Without Illan Meslier’s gaffe, Leeds would have finished fourth, trailing Scott Parker’s Burnley side in third.

On Friday, rivals face off as Leeds welcome Chris Wilder’s Blades, who have had a fantastic season thus far. They are second, undefeated and have conceded only three goals in nine games.

Leeds have already suffered a lot of injuries, with Ethan Ampadu out until the New Year and both Ilia Gruev and Max Wober requiring surgery. Daniel Farke has taken another blow.

Brenden Aaronson #11 of the United States during the second half against Mexico at Akron Stadium on October 15, 2024 in Zapopan, Mexico.

Brenden Aaronson played 93 minutes for the USA against Mexico.

Managers always dislike foreign breaks. While Leeds duo Manor Solomon and Dan James appear to be in contention for Friday, Brenden Aaronson appears to be out.

It already appeared uncertain. Mauricio Pochettino’s second game as manager of the United States began around 3.30 a.m. on Wednesday, making Aaronson a doubt for Friday’s match against Sheffield United.

Typically, Pochettino has paid no attention to Leeds’ fixture congestion. Aaronson played the entire 93 minutes as the USA fell to Mexico in Jalisco. One of just four outfielders to accomplish so for Pochettino’s side.

Mexico won thanks to Raul Jimenez, the Fulham striker who scored once and assisted. Cesar Huerta scored in the second half to give Mexico a comfortable 2-0 win.

However, it was a good respite for Aaronson. His recent participation in the USA squad has been sporadic, with him in and out of the starting lineup, and if he did start, he would be one of the first to be pulled and substituted.

Aaronson stats vs Mexico:

Pochettino clearly loves the look of Leeds’ £25 million man. However, his 93-minute appearance on Wednesday morning suggests he is unlikely to start in just a few days, when Leeds face The Blades.
