The hosts were the first to threaten in the eighth minute, when Holt delivered a long pass to Sam Dalby sprinting down the left, but the on-loan Wrexham striker lost his cool and sent the ball soaring over St Mirren goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe’s goal and the stand behind him.
United came close to opening the score when Will Ferry combined beautifully with Dalby before sprinting in on goal, but the wing-back’s ferociously hit drive cannoned against Balcombe’s right-hand post.
St Mirren had an opportunity when Scott Tanser struck from beyond the United area, but Declan Gallagher made a crucial block, turning the ball behind for a corner.
In the 63rd minute, the Buddies had another wonderful opportunity to open the score, but Olutoyosi Olusanya’s goal-bound drive was saved by Holt with a last-ditch block.
However, the home team broke the tie in the 79th minute.
Marcus Fraser grabbed Holt as he attempted to clear the ball, prompting referee Matthew MacDermid to go over to the pitchside monitor to evaluate the incident using the VAR before pointing to the spot.
Holt took the penalty and calmly sent Balcombe the wrong way.
Fraser’s day was made much worse when he surrendered another penalty for bringing down substitute Louis Moult. The defender was first given a yellow card, but it was changed to red after another monitor review by the referee.
Holt was the designated taker once more, but this time Balcombe made an outstanding stop.
However, from the resulting corner in the third minute of stoppage time, Adegboyega stabbed home from close range to secure the Terrors’ victory.
