Mike Williams’ costly mistake on Mnf was nail in the Davante Adams trade coffin

Tom Wagner and Tom Brady are poised to have their minority interest purchase of the Las Vegas Raiders recognized.

Make no mistake: this was an Aaron Rodgers move all the way. On Tuesday morning, the New York Jets traded for Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams, following a divisional prime-time loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Overall, Rodgers looked fantastic on Monday night. However, the Jets dropped to 2-4. To rescue the season, New York traded a conditional third-rounder for Adams, perhaps resulting in a second-round pick.

So, aside from the obvious reason, why did the Jets execute this move now?

Consider New York’s final drive on Monday night, when Rodgers threw a deep throw to wide receiver Mike Williams, which could have put the Jets in position for a game-tying field goal or, who knows, a game-winning touchdown.

Every Jets fan who saw the game understands what occurred next. Williams tripped, fell, and allowed Bills defensive back Taron Johnson to intercept the ball, effectively ending the game (after Buffalo managed a single first down on the next drive).

According to Rodgers, Williams’ blunder was the primary reason for New York’s loss. The quarterback clearly explained the play, route, and Williams’ costly mistake.

You have to assume that after this game, Rodgers went straight to Woody Johnson and instructed him to finalize an Adams deal… or else.

He can talk and deny how much power people believe he has, but let’s be honest here. Rodgers desperately wanted Adams, and he got him.

Williams is going to take a back seat after his error and the Adams trade. Allen Lazard has no danger of being benched. He is one of Rodgers’ people. Of course, Garrett Wilson is Garrett Wilson. So, he isn’t going anywhere.

Adams will dominate targets in the foreseeable future, with the other two filling in and having their moments. That means Williams’ tenure as a member of this offense is likely limited. Rodgers has already lauded Xavier Gipson, urging the youthful speedster to obtain more playing time.

Williams is unlikely to receive much playing time in the future, unless an unexpected injury occurs.

The Jets now have a triple-threat at wide receiver, something Rodgers is very comfortable with. Also, don’t forget that the backfield is getting a lot of pressure relieved. Breece Hall and Braelon Allen should continue to feast.

At least, that’s the plan in a perfect world, which we’re not living in as Jets fans.
