Exclusive: Kieran Tierney has opted to leave Arsenal and come back to Celtic.

Kieran Tierney’s time at Arsenal, which he joined from Celtic in 2019, appears to be coming to an end.

Tierney moved from Celtic Park to the Emirates Stadium during a period of rapid growth in his career, deciding to join Arsenal.

Although the former Celtic darling had a promising start in N5, a series of injuries throughout the 2020/21 season slowed his growth.

Prior to his decline in the squad, it appeared that Tierney would one day captain Arsenal, a brilliant professional who led by example on the pitch.

However, when Mikel Arteta welcomed Oleksandr Zinchenko to the club, Tierney was effectively made surplus to requirements.

Kieran Tierney keen to leave Arsenal for Brendan Rodgers reunion at Celtic

Arsenal is willing to let Tierney go for the reasons stated, while Celtic is eager to get the Scotland international back to the team.

With 18 months remaining on his Arsenal contract, Tierney was reportedly in talks to return to Parkhead in the summer but a nasty hamstring injury put a stop to that.

The left-back received the injury while playing for Scotland at the Euros and is yet to return.

Tierney has been training independently recently and is expected to be fully recovered by January, allowing him to pursue a new opportunity.

Arsenal are willing to allow the Scot depart on loan, which is something Celtic would be interested in.

Long-term, Arsenal would be open to a deal that would allow Celtic to make a permanent move.

And, as previously indicated, sources believe Tierney has prioritised a return to Glasgow.

Rodgers refused to rule out Tierney returning to Celtic

Interestingly, Brendan Rodgers, who Tierney previously worked with at Celtic, stated ‘you never know’ about a possible return for the full-back last year.

Rodgers alluded to the fact that Celtic would be unable to pay a large fee to Arsenal, and his words may be appropriate for the type of agreement described above.

Rodgers stated: “When I spoke with him down the road in the Premier League, all we talked about was Celtic.” He’s from Celtic, but he now plays for Arsenal, which is a terrific club.

“Never say never in football. Who knows what could happen? We wouldn’t be able to buy Kieran for £25-£30 million, based on the stats I’ve seen.

“I’m very sure we wouldn’t be able to pay his large wage. However, one never knows. Kieran has an incredible history with the club. He was a massive part of my time here, so there will always be that link. You never know.”
