NFL insider suggests Denver Broncos will have to ‘overpay’ free agents because of Sean Payton’s presence

The Denver Broncos will incur millions in sunk expenses as a result of their choice to trade for Russell Wilson, give him a five-year, $245 million contract, and then sit him. Additionally, the franchise’s reputation has suffered.

This includes head coach Sean Payton, who was fired by the New Orleans Saints due to a salary cap issue despite having won a Super Bowl with them in the past.

Yet, now Payton has dug his own hole by being associated with the messy benching of Wilson, where the Broncos threatened him with either deferring his contract guarantees or losing his job as starting quarterback.

It’s a very disrespectful move to a nine-time Pro Bowl QB, who some felt was on track to make the Hall of Fame.

The way the Broncos have handled this matter has obviously been noticed by teams, players, agents, and executives, and it will undoubtedly affect their ability to bring elite talent to Denver.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that a number of NFL agents now think the Broncos might be “forced to overpay” for free agents.

because of the way Coach Payton and the team handled the Wilson situation, agents were enticed to come to Denver.

That exacerbates an already difficult scenario for the Broncos, who will already have a tight cap situation if they move on from

Wilson’s deal, which has a dead cap of up to $50 million.
