Norwich City: Errol Mundle-Smith tipped to follow Jon Rowe's footsteps

This post is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features personal comments from FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible signings, and more.

Norwich City has seen a recent influx of talented players at Carrow Road, including some rising stars.

Jon Rowe and Abu Kamara are the most recent departures from the football club after shown potential as young players, while Alex Matos and Bali Mumba were also on the books at a young age.

As a result, the East Anglian outfit’s next star is always in the spotlight, with Errol Mundle-Smith being one player who has had a lot of people talking at such a young age.

We spoke with Football League World’s Canaries fan commentator Zeke Downes about the young sensation, who he believes has the potential to be a breakout player for the Norfolk club.

Errol Mundle-Smith shines in Norwich City’s youth setup.

Mundle-Smith, like Kamara and Rowe before him, has built a strong reputation inside Norwich’s academy system over the last two seasons, demonstrating a natural feel in front of goal.

Last season, the 18-year-old scored three times in seven Premier League 2 games for Norwich City’s development team, totaling 12 goals across the under-18 and under-21 age categories. He has also scored five goals in six games this season.

A brace against a youthful Southampton team drew the attention of those with one eye on developments within the City junior setup. Another goal against Manchester United’s academy will only add to his blossoming reputation.

Downes identified the teenage striker as the next great potential at Carrow Road, after signing his first professional contract earlier this year.

When asked about the issue, Downes remarked, “I believe the next kid to break through at the club will be Errol Mundle-Smith.

“I believe it is easier for attacking players to break through because scoring a lot of goals makes you seem good.

“He’s performing well; he hasn’t been around long, but he’s scoring a lot of goals, and our young squad now looks fairly good. So he’s doing a good job of standing out.”

Norwich City must learn from Abu Kamara and Alex Matos’ experiences with Errol Mundle-Smith.

It has been a frequent narrative in previous seasons that Norwich City’s best young players have moved on to other clubs owing to a lack of first-team opportunities.

Matos experienced this firsthand in recent seasons, as he was unable to make an appearance for the club before going to Chelsea. He has since participated for the first-team and had a loan stint at Huddersfield Town.

The situation with Kamara [above] remains a source of concern for Norfolk fans. The promising forward excelled on loan for Portsmouth last season before requesting a move this summer.

After leaving Carrow Road in August, the teenage sensation joined Championship rivals Hull City, but has only started one game for the Tigers.

With Mundle-Smith emerging as the next star, Carrow Road fans will be hopeful that past mistakes have been learned, with academy hopefuls given every opportunity to establish themselves and their long-term future assured.
