Dundee United’s dramatic late double downs St Mirren

Dundee United scored two late goals to beat St Mirren 2-0 at Tannadice.

Defenders Kevin Holt and Emmanuel Adegboyega were the home heroes, scoring the goals that clinched the victory,

putting the Terrors fourth in the table and level on points with Rangers.

The result ended the Buddies’ four-game unbeaten streak, as they finished with only 10 men when Marcus Fraser

was sent off.

United made only one change to the team that drew 1-1 with Rangers at Ibrox last week, with Adegboyega replacing

winger Kai Fotheringham as the hosts switched to a back three.

Not unexpectedly, St Mirren stuck with the lineup that defeated Aberdeen in Paisley last weekend. The hosts were the

first to threaten in the eighth minute, when Holt sent a long pass to Sam Dalby sprinting down the left, but the on-

loan Wrexham striker lost his cool and sent the ball soaring over St Mirren goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe’s goal and

the stand behind him.

United then came close to opening the score when Will Ferry connected up beautifully with Dalby before sprinting in

on goal, but the winger’s ferocious drive cannoned off Balcombe’s right post.

St Mirren had a chance when Scott Tanser struck from outside the United box, but Declan Gallagher made a crucial

block, turning the ball behind for a corner.

In the 63rd minute, the Buddies had another wonderful opportunity to open the score, but Olutoyosi Olusanya’s

goal-bound drive was saved by Holt with a last-ditch block.

However, the home team broke the tie in the 79th minute.Marcus Fraser caught Holt as he attempted to clear the

ball, prompting referee Matthew MacDermid to go over to the pitchside monitor to evaluate the incident using the

VAR before pointing to the spot.

Holt took the penalty and calmly sent Balcombe the wrong way.

Fraser’s day was made much worse when he conceded another penalty for pulling down substitute Louis Moult. The

defender was initially given a yellow card, but it was changed to red after another monitor check by the referee.

Holt was the designated taker once more, but this time Balcombe made an outstanding stop.

However, from the resulting corner in the third minute of stoppage time, Adegboyega stabbed home from close

range to secure the Terrors’ victory.
