Blackburn Rovers fans cause surprise as Leeds United player targeted

Beren Cross was taken aback when Blackburn Rovers supporters appeared to jeer at Leeds United star Joe Rothwell during their Championship match on Saturday because of his past with the team.

The Whites are now in second place in the Championship after losing the match 1-0 on November 30.

In 2022, Rothwell left Ewood Park on a free transfer to join Bournemouth, who had just been promoted to the Premier League. He has been loaned out ever since, which is how he ended up playing for Daniel Farke this season.

Cross, a journalist for Leeds Live, expressed his surprise at the fans’ responses to the midfielder’s comeback on November 30 via his personal X account.

“Some boos for Rothwell from the locals. Assumed he had left on good terms,” he wrote.

Joe Rothwell has been a standout player for Leeds United this season

Rothwell and Ao Tanaka’s chemistry has been able to flourish since both Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev were forced to miss prolonged periods of time due to their respective injuries.

The West Yorkshire team is able to play with greater freedom in both attack and defence because the midfield partnership has a far more offensive style of play.

Leeds’ fortunes have improved since they joined the team, and although Gruev and Ampadu’s defensive prowess may cause them to lose some defensive stability, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk are more than capable of holding the fort.

This season, Rothwell’s set pieces have been a sight to behold at Elland Road. His corner deliveries have even managed to end the Whites’ lack of corner-scoring goals.

The on-loan star’s future is uncertain, but it’s difficult to understand why the Whites wouldn’t want to sign him long-term if they were promoted to the Premier League this season.
