Norwich City put on a transfer clinic with genius deal that landed them £38m: View.

Emi Buendia

Norwich City had a very active summer window, with the club able to spend following the high-profile exits of Gabriel Sara, Jon Rowe, and Adam Idah, among others.

In general, Carrow Road’s recruitment team sought younger players, which is a reasonable strategy.

Norwich aims to develop by focusing on recruiting and adopting the buying low and selling high strategy, similar to Brentford and Brighton.

Norwich City’s acquisition of Emi Buendia was a fantastic commercial move.

This tactic has proven successful for Norwich in the past, with Emi Buendia being the club’s most notable recent signing.

In 2018, Norwich City bought the offensive midfielder from Getafe for a reported £1.6 million transfer fee.

Buendia was with Getafe at the time, a La Liga team, but he had been on loan with Cultural Leonesa in the second division, so he wasn’t the type of acquisition that made headlines.

Buendia rapidly established himself as a vital member for Daniel Farke’s side, succeeding James Maddison, who had moved to Leicester City.

They were large shoes to fill, but Buendia accepted the challenge and helped Norwich win the Championship by scoring eight goals and assisting 12 times.

He couldn’t match those stats in the Premier League the following season, but Buendia showed glimpses of brilliance as the Yellows were demoted, so it was a bonus for Norwich when they were able to keep the player after relegation.

Buendia took his game to the next level in the 2020/21 season, as he had one of the finest individual campaigns we’ve seen in the Championship.

Buendia scored 15 goals and assisted 16 times, helping Farke’s team win the title in style.

Norwich City make a significant Emi Buendia profit.

Buendia’s performances made it clear that returning to the Premier League would not be enough to keep him in Norfolk. Despite speculation, Aston Villa won the race to recruit the attacker, agreeing to a deal for up to £38 million.

Of course, from a football standpoint, it was a setback for Norwich, who were relegated once again and have not returned to the Premier League since.

The deal must be viewed in context, however it resulted in a significant profit for the club and aligned with Norwich’s desired outcome.

They saw a talent at an early age, got three very excellent years out of Buendia on the field, and then sold him for a huge profit. Unfortunately, the funds raised from the sale were not judiciously utilized, and Norwich suffered as a result on the pitch.

Buendia exemplified Norwich’s successful transfer approach, and the club hopes that Ante Crnac, Amankwah Forson, and Oscar Schwartau can follow suit in the future.
