Time’s up: McKenna must offload Ipswich ace who earns as much as Delap

Ipswich Town has made a stunning journey to the Premier League, achieving back-to-back promotions from League One, which is unprecedented in today’s league.

Kieran McKenna, the club’s manager, has been credited with the club’s recent success. He came in during a difficult period on the pitch, galvanised the first team, and instilled confidence in the players, resulting in amazing performances.

Many supporters would have considered a season in England’s top division a pipe dream, but because to McKenna’s magic, a generation of fans will have the time of their lives in 2024/25.

To improve their chances of survival, the Tractor Boys spent almost £100 million on new players during the summer transfer window.

One particular addition has piqued the interest of fans following his recent relocation to East Anglia, where he has dominated the Premier League in his first full season.

Liam Delap’s stats for Ipswich Town

Many questioned the signing of striker Liam Delap from Manchester City, who cost the club up to £20 million in the summer.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Championship club Hull City, making only two substitute appearances in England’s top-flight.

However, the teenager has adapted to the Premier League like a duck to water, having an immediate impact in the final third for McKenna’s team.

Delap has four goals in his first seven league games for the Tractor Boys and is presently ranked joint fourth in the top scorers rankings.

His two goals against Aston Villa are unquestionably the highlights of his stay at the club thus far, with his double securing a crucial point against a team that finished in the top four during the 2023/24 season.

The striker followed up his brace with another goal in his most recent outing against West Ham United, but it was unable to secure any points as they lost 4-1.

There’s no disputing that Ipswich will face difficulties coming season, but their chances will be boosted if the striker maintains his superb form in front of goal.

Despite his impressive start at the club, only one other first-team member makes the same per week as him, yet it’s safe to say his pay does not represent his importance to McKenna’s team.

The man who earns just as much as Delap

Despite the surge of new recruits throughout the transfer window, many first-team members remain at Portman Road after securing promotion from the Championship last season.

Christian Walton, a 28-year-old custodian, only made one league appearance last season, serving as a backup to Vaclav Hladky.

Despite his lack of minutes in the 2023/24 season, he started the season opener against Liverpool until new signing Aro Muric took over as the club’s number one between the sticks.

As a result, Walton has failed to play since, instead serving as a backup and pocketing a little sum.

The shot-stopper makes £20k per week, which is comparable to star player Delap. However, his high salary does not represent his value to McKenna’s squad.

Given his high pay, the club may opt to offload the custodian and allow youngster Cieran Slicker to get crucial experience as Muric’s backup.

There’s no disputing Walton is a talented player, but with his current salary and lack of first-team playing, he might be released at the next opportunity in January.
