BBC Sports Adam Idah in honest Celtic ‘carried away’ admission as he sets 2 main targets to get back on track.

The Hoops star admits he may have been guilty of believing his own hype after signing off his loan deal last summer.

Adam Idah believes his flawless finish to last season may have contributed to his slow start to this season.

The Celtic striker confesses he may have believed his own hype after finishing off his initial loan term from Norwich City in style, winning the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers at Hampden in May and clinching a domestic double for the Hoops. It helped secure Idah a permanent £9.5 million transfer to the Scottish champions in the summer, but he says he was dissatisfied with his form in the opening few months of the season.

On reflection, the 23-year-old is pleased with his development, which included a double in last Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Hearts at Tynecastle.Idah aims to enhance his overall performance for Brendan Rodgers’ squad. He stated, “I don’t know the exact reason, but I may have gotten a little carried away with myself from last season.”

“After finishing on such a high last season, I may have assumed I could just return and hope for the same. However, as we all know, football does not operate that way. As I previously stated, it is simply a matter of thinking back and returning to phase one while remaining myself. I know what I’m capable of, and all I need to do now is get back on track and do the things I know I can do.

“I probably wasn’t pleased with how I started the season.” It wasn’t until the final few days that I realised I had a goal every 75 or 76 minutes. It sort of made me see it’s not actually as horrible as what I thought, and I think for any striker, if they’ve had a start like that, they’d be quite happy of themselves.

“So for me, it’s simply about moving forward and achieving as many goals as I can. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly hard on myself. I believe I’m pretty honest with myself. Yeah, objectives are fantastic, but in terms of how I’ve really done, it’s probably not as good as I’d want, so I wouldn’t say that’s being too harsh on myself.

“I believe I have individuals who are supportive enough to tell me what I need to do, and if I’m doing well, they tell me so.

“I believe for me, it is simply being honest. I’m not one of those men who will back down from a problem; if I’m not doing well, I’ll attempt to overcome it, and if I’m doing well, it’s about keeping a level head and moving on.”

While he has had to make do as an impact replacement for much of the season, Idah is eager for any opportunity to lead Celtic’s attack. The Republic of Ireland international believes the task is straightforward in a team that brings so much inventiveness and weaponry from all angles.

“It’s unreal, especially with the wingers and midfielders,” he told me. “Every time we play, you get a lot of the ball, and it’s not like you’re chasing balls down and doing scrappy stuff.

“The team makes it so simple for you to just get in the box and maybe score a goal, which is great, and hopefully we can keep it up. Coming on as a substitute or starting a game doesn’t bother me much.

At the end of the day, we all want to win every game, regardless of whether we play for five minutes or 90 minutes. You’re all trying to make an effect in that game, and I believe that is the challenge for all of us: to do our best, and I’m sure everyone is having fun right now.

“It’s a hectic season right now; everyone’s going to get an opportunity here, and I believe that no matter what game it is or when it is, you can put anyone in the starting lineup and nothing will change. That is a nice problem to have.

“We have such a tremendous group currently. Many gamers will now have the option to gain gaming experience. At the end of the day, it is all about winning games, and everyone is on the same page.”
