Adam Idah believes his flawless finish to last season may have contributed to his slow start to this season.
The Celtic striker confesses he may have believed his own hype after finishing off his initial loan term from Norwich City in style, winning the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers at Hampden in May and clinching a domestic double for the Hoops. It helped secure Idah a permanent £9.5 million transfer to the Scottish champions in the summer, but he says he was dissatisfied with his form in the opening few months of the season.
On reflection, the 23-year-old is pleased with his development, which included a double in last Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Hearts at Tynecastle.Idah aims to enhance his overall performance for Brendan Rodgers’ squad. He stated, “I don’t know the exact reason, but I may have gotten a little carried away with myself from last season.”
“After finishing on such a high last season, I may have assumed I could just return and hope for the same. However, as we all know, football does not operate that way. As I previously stated, it is simply a matter of thinking back and returning to phase one while remaining myself. I know what I’m capable of, and all I need to do now is get back on track and do the things I know I can do.
“I probably wasn’t pleased with how I started the season.” It wasn’t until the final few days that I realised I had a goal every 75 or 76 minutes. It sort of made me see it’s not actually as horrible as what I thought, and I think for any striker, if they’ve had a start like that, they’d be quite happy of themselves.
“So for me, it’s simply about moving forward and achieving as many goals as I can. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly hard on myself. I believe I’m pretty honest with myself. Yeah, objectives are fantastic, but in terms of how I’ve really done, it’s probably not as good as I’d want, so I wouldn’t say that’s being too harsh on myself.
“I believe I have individuals who are supportive enough to tell me what I need to do, and if I’m doing well, they tell me so.
“I believe for me, it is simply being honest. I’m not one of those men who will back down from a problem; if I’m not doing well, I’ll attempt to overcome it, and if I’m doing well, it’s about keeping a level head and moving on.”
