‘Ridiculous’ – Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst fumes at EFL after Birmingham City thrashing

Paul Hurst, the manager of Shrewsbury Town, stated that the EFL Trophy is “getting a bit silly” following Birmingham City’s elimination from the competition.

Tuesday night at The Croud Meadow, Blues crushed Shrewsbury 4-0 to position themselves only one win away from Southern Section Group A qualification. To advance, Chris Davies’ team just needs to avoid losing to Fulham Under-21s.

Supporters aren’t too fond of Premier League teams competing in the competition, which is currently called the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. A large number of people opt to abstain from games in protest, and 65% of the 4,847 spectators at The Croud Meadow were Blues supporters.

In Hurst’s first season as manager, Shrewsbury made it to the championship game in 2018, however losses to Fulham U21s and Blues mean their last group match against Walsall is meaningless. Speaking to Shrewsbury’s internal media following the match, Hurst also criticized the EFL for managing the campaign.
