Sheffield Wednesday coach Chris Powell rates chances of a return to management one day

Sheffield Wednesday first-team coach Chris Powell has discussed his role at the club, and what the future might hold.

Chris Powell is a well-known figure among Sheffield Wednesday fans, noted for his antics on the bench.
He comes midway through last season, having previously coached Spurs and the England national team.

Dejphon Chansiri intended to provide Danny Rohl an English-speaking coach with experience in English football.

Powell’s arrival at Hillsborough has undoubtedly played a significant role in the club’s success under Rohl.

Powell continues to collaborate closely with Rohl as part of an ever-expanding backroom squad, with Sheffield Wednesday hiring a set-piece coach last month.

Powell, a former England international, has worked as a manager for Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town, and Southend United, with mixed results.

Chris Powell plays down possible return to management

Powell spoke with Football Heaven recently about his job in S6 and what he does behind the scenes.

He emphasized how he serves as a sounding board for Rohl’s fresh ideas, as well as how he works closely with the players on the training field.

Previously, Powell discussed how Sheffield Wednesday saved his life after a health scare before joining the club.

He has never hidden his love for his position at Wednesday, and in his most recent interview, he downplayed the possibility of returning to management.

Powell stated, “It’s a nice role for me because I don’t think I’ll manage again.

“So actually it’s a good role where I can do a bit of coaching, I can do some individual work with players; that’s one thing I really like, whether they’re young or old.”

Sheffield Wednesday must keep hold of Chris Powell

Rohl signed a three-year contract extension with the club this summer. However, if he continues to impress, Rohl may leave before those three years are up.

If that happens, retaining Powell on board would be critical for the Owls; he has the knowledge to steer the ship through these turbulent times.

He might possibly serve as caretaker manager while Chansiri searches for a new manager, and keeping Powell in place for future managers would also add to the club’s sense of continuity.

Sheffield Wednesday are obviously fortunate to have someone like Powell on their roster.
