Before every game...' - Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham opens up on pre-match ritual with brother Jude

The Sunderland midfielder has made another appearance in the England international’s documentary series.

Sunderland midfielder Joe Bellingham discusses his pre-match rituals with his older brother Jude before playing for their respective teams.

This season, the adolescent has performed well for the Black Cats, while his elder sister remains a standout player for Real Madrid in La Liga. Jude, although representing probably the largest club on the globe, has made no secret of his interest in Jobe’s career. He has regularly been photographed watching Sunderland matches, whether in person or from the Spanish capital.

And Jobe has disclosed that he and his brother communicate before each game. In the latest installment of Jude’s YouTube video series, the younger Bellingham is interviewed ahead to last season’s Champions League final, which Jude and Real won.

The Sunderland starlet reflected on his sibling’s remarkable career, saying: “The first time I saw him score, I was in the away end.” It was incredible. I was directly behind his goal. He scored, and the reaction in the stadium was incredible. Like, Blues fans are everywhere. I recall seeing J. Bellingham on the BBC Sport app and thinking, ‘What?’. Like, crazy.

“People wouldn’t believe how wild it is or how fast it’s gone. If you had told someone, “In four years, this kid will be in the Champions League final, playing for Madrid, and winning La Liga player of the year in the same season,” they would have said, “Shut up!” He may win the Champions League tonight, and he’s only 20. How many more will he win?”

He joked, “I feel like I’m giving him way too much credit here, but… Before every game, we say good luck to each other and stuff.” I won’t get, like, emotional to him – you know, some people might want to message and be like, ‘Come on!’. “I believe he is so good that he has secured the Champions League.”

Jobe has appeared significantly in all four episodes of Jude’s documentary series, and his older brother regularly praises the 19-year-old. In an earlier interview, the England international addressed the many similarities between the two, saying, “The worry is that people judge him based on my achievements.” But I’m very cognizant of that because I know it’s something that people will constantly hurl at him, which is unfair since he’s an incredible talent and player in his own right. People will use him to poke fun at me, and vice versa, so we’re almost like each other’s biggest admirers while simultaneously being the biggest targets for each other because we care so much about each other.

“He has to cope with more than I would have at his age, yet he does so with such dignity. He wants to strive to establish his own legacy and path. At the end of the day, all I care about is that he’s happy. I am more concerned about his pleasure than my own.”
