Cowboys Waive LB Rashaan Evans Following Arrest; Activate T Matt Waletzko Off

The Cowboys decided to activate second-year lineman Matt Waletzko from injured reserve because they needed some depth at

offensive tackle, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. In addition, the organization waived veteran linebacker Rashaan Evans,

who was arrested yesterday in Frisco, Texas, for possession of marijuana, using the opportunity presented by the active roster addition, as reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2.

Thuma Edoga, the versatile backup lineman, and starting offensive tackle Tyron Smith are both listed as injured this week;

Waletzko returns to the active roster just in time to add some much-needed depth. He may not be ready to return straight away,

and the move might have been required to keep him from going back to season-ending IR.

His practice window opened precisely 21 days ago. Nevertheless, he’s back on the active roster and will be needed by the

Cowboys to add depth in the final weeks of the regular season and beyond.

As for Evans, the team’s depth at linebacker is not exactly overflowing. That doesn’t exactly mean that the move is a reaction to

the 28-year-old’s arrest this week. In fact, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News refuted that exact assertion, claiming

that the Cowboys “downplayed the timing” of the two events even seeming to hint that Evans is a candidate to return to the practice squad, should he clear waivers.

Though Evans earned a start earlier in the season, his usage as of late has shown that the team has been relying on the veteran

linebacker less and less leading up to his placement on waivers, supporting the claim that waiving him may be unrelated to his arrest.

In any case, Waletzko is now the 53-man roster spot holder, and he will try to contribute while he’s there. Conversely, Evans will wait to see if he is placed on waivers, though he may be able to rejoin Dallas’ practice squad.
