‘Most embarrassed’ – Matt Taylor offers verdict after Bristol Rovers’ heavy Swindon defeat

A much-changed Bristol Rovers side shipped four first-half goals away at League Two side Swindon Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy

Matt Taylor has described Bristol Rovers’ first-half performance away at Swindon Town as one of the most embarrassing moments of his career, as the Gas shipped four goals to a much-changed League Two side, losing 4-0 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

The Rovers manager made nine changes from Saturday’s 3-1 League One win at Burton Albion, however Luke Thomas, Taylor Moore, and Connor Taylor remain in the starting lineup, with all ten outfield players having started at least one league game this season.
Although the game took place in a competition that many fans dislike, the first half performance and final result will be remembered as one of the worst moments produced by a Gas side in a long time, and Taylor certainly thought it was up there in terms of his management career.

“Worse than miserable,” the Gas manager said after the match. “I think it’s probably the most embarrassed I’ve felt for a team in the first half. This is exactly how we went about our business. Wasn’t at the desired, acceptable, or professional level. But, as painful as tonight was, it also provided a little more clarity, and hopefully a little more clarity for the viewing world, that the team isn’t exactly where people believe it is, and the players aren’t quite where we need them to be. We came in second place tonight as a team.”
Rovers had a positive week last week, winning back-to-back league games over Charlton Athletic and Burton Albion, as pressure grew on Taylor following four consecutive defeats.

The 42-year-old was met with some unhappy remarks by travelling supporters after full-time, but he had strong words for the players involved in the game against Swindon, which saw a big number of changes made.
