Nicolo Rovella, a Lazio midfielder, describes how he gradually fell in love with the club after coming and establishing himself as a cornerstone.

The 22-year-old Genoa youth product was signed by Juventus in January 2021, but never got an opportunity to distinguish himself in Turin. In the summer of 2023, the young Italian signed with the Biancocelesti. While he had his ups and downs during his first season in Rome, he has since established himself as an important member in Marco Baroni’s squad.

Last Season’s Issues

In the 2-1 win over Empoli, the deep-lying playmaker excelled once again. In a post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Rovella attributed last season’s troubles on an ailment that hindered his performance.

Every time we play, we must aim for victory. We are demonstrating it, and we must continue down this route.

I believe it was physical concerns that ruined me last season, since I had groin troubles. But I feel a lot better now. I was a little short on verticalizations, but it was partly due to the opponent and the coach’s requirements, which were different this term.

The teenage player described how he gradually but steadily became a devoted Lazio fan.

I feel like a Lazio supporter. I wasn’t born a Biancocelesti fan, but I’m glad to have become one. It’s a great love of mine, and I aim to play here for as long as feasible. I feel I still have a lot of room to grow and improve.

Italy Snub

Despite his strong play, Rovella was unable to obtain an Italy call-up.

I’m really thrilled to be playing for Lazio at the moment. Then, whomever makes the calls will need to assess the situation. I have a lot of respect for Mr Spalletti.
