Cardiff City manager position open to former Birmingham City player and Wolves coach.

Cardiff City manager position open to former Birmingham City player and Wolves coach.

The Cardiff City position is up for grabs, with a Wolves coach and a former Birmingham City player competing.

Following the dismissal of Erol Bulut, two coaches with ties to Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are rumoured to be in the running for the vacant Cardiff City position.

Two names being considered for the position are John O’Shea and Shaun Derry, according to a report from Wales Online. O’Shea was a coach at Birmingham but left the squad after Wayne Rooney was relieved of his duties back in January. Derry is presently working as a coach for the first team at Wolves under Gary O’Neill.

Both of them have been first team head coaches in the past, albeit Derry has considerably more experience in such a job than O’Shea does. With differing degrees of success, Derry oversaw both Cambridge United and Notts County; O’Shea’s only tenure as a first team manager was when he served as the Republic of Ireland national team’s temporary manager.

Though Derry has more managerial experience, it should be highlighted that he hasn’t held a head coaching position since 2018. Instead, since leaving Cambridge, he has favoured coaching positions behind the scenes, working for Oxford United and Crystal Palace before joining Wolves in 2023.

Due to the accomplishments of two other former Manchester United players, Tom Cleverley and Rudy van Nistelrooy, in managerial positions, there is conjecture that O’Shea’s name may be promoted. As Alex Ferguson was the team’s manager when all of these coaches were on the pitch, maybe the Scot taught them a thing or two?

However, it has elevated O’Shea to a somewhat sought-after status as a young coach, particularly when his meagre accomplishments during his brief tenure at Ireland are considered.

In spite of this, the Cardiff City team is now at the bottom of the Championship table with just five points from nine games, thus whomever is hired to lead the team may have an impossible task ahead of them.
