By announcing his support for Willie Peters for Super League Coach of the Year, Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet has given the greatest tribute to Hull KR, the team his opponents in the Grand Final.

As they get ready for their tantalizing Grand Final matchup against Hull KR on Saturday—who are gearing up for their first-ever attendance at the big dance—Wigan is aiming for a historic quadruple.

Speaking following Wigan’s resounding 38-0 victory against Leigh Leopards in the semi-finals on Saturday, Peet disclosed that Peters had received his vote for Super League Coach of the Year.

Along with Paul Rowley of the Salford Red Devils and Mike Eccles of the London Broncos, Peet and Peters are the nominees for this year’s Super League Coach of the Year award. The winner will be revealed on Tuesday night in Leeds during the Rugby League Awards ceremony.

When questioned about Peters’ work with the Robins, Peet told Love Rugby League, “The organization has built (over recent years) and Willie has added to that no doubt.”

“He’s my choice for Coach of the Year in the Super League.” For me, it was a toss-up between him and Sam Burgess, but I felt that Willie Peters had given Hull KR that extra toughness with what he has likely delivered over the course of a few seasons.

“I believe he has led them incredibly well, and it is a credit to him that they have been so consistent. It is also evident that he has instilled a strong work ethic.”

“I believe he should get all the praise. Some of the players he has elevated to new heights in their game, in my opinion, are also important indicators for a coach.

“There are so many that stand out to me, like James Batchelor, Elliot Minchella, and their two hookers. Dean Hadley is one that jumps out to me; his game has skyrocketed.” Tyrone May and Mikey Lewis are spoken about a lot, and rightfully so, but I believe the focus is more on the industry he has created around them.

With their impressive trophy cabinet from previous wins, the Warriors will be favorites going into Saturday’s title game at the Theatre of Dreams, but Peet isn’t worried.

Pete said, “I’m not bothered,” in response to a question concerning the favorites tag. The same as tonight (against Leigh), it’s completely meaningless in a final.

“Hull KR will probably ask the same question as well, but I wouldn’t change anything about how we approach it.”
