Celtic must sign Chelsea player on loan in January

Matt O’Riley, perhaps Celtic’s greatest player, left the club in the summer. The team made a number of new recruits to replace him. Arne Engels was a major figure. The Hoops paid a club record transfer price to get him to Parkhead. Luke McCowan was signed from Dundee FC. And, while not a new face, Paulo Bernardo was recruited permanently from Benfica following a good loan stay last season.

These are undeniably talented players. However, they do not appear to have the same output as O’Riley had.

O’Riley scored around 40 goals last season. Can any of Celtic’s current midfielders accomplish that now? The basic response is “no.” So it might not be a bad idea to offer another choice in the midst of the park during the winter.

One would expect Carney Chukwuemeka to be looking for a change of scenery this winter. He has only appeared once for Chelsea since Enzo Maresca was appointed manager.

Celtic must sign a Chelsea player on loan in January.

Chukwuemeka is an extremely talented player. And if he is available for loan in January, Celtic should surely make the call.

Chukwuemeka is the type of talent who only needs a setting where he can play a reasonable amount of football to demonstrate his abilities. We’ve seen glimpses of it before at Chelsea and Aston Villa.

He has scored a few goals for Chelsea in his career, but he has yet to exhibit the goalscoring ability from midfield that he had at Aston Villa’s youth levels. Of course, it’s difficult to accomplish when you don’t have much game time. Overall, Celtic would benefit from this low-risk, high-reward decision.
