Newcastle United’s seven-figure warning to Manchester United as Dan Ashworth nightmare worsens

The Magpies will put up a fight if Manchester United try to lure Eddie Howe to Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag under fire.

Manchester United will receive the same “back off” message from Newcastle United officials if they request Eddie Howe.

The Red Devils are under fan pressure following an unimpressive run of results under Erik ten Hag. Despite a strained relationship between the head coach and former sporting director Dan Ashworth, Howe remains a potential possibility at Manchester United.

One of Ashworth’s first acts as Newcastle manager was to offer Howe a long-term contract in 2022. And the ex-England player pulled the same trick with Ten Hag early in his stint.

The 53-year-old will want to give the Dutchman as much time as possible before making a decision, but supporter anger at Manchester United is growing and might worsen if the FA Cup holders lose to Aston Villa tomorrow. Newcastle’s attitude was straightforward when Howe was high on England’s list following Euro 2024, with the Magpies informing the FA that he was under contract with a large compensation amount required to release him.

Despite initial issues between Howe and Ashworth’s replacement Paul Mitchell, Manchester United will see similar results as England. Last month, Mitchell stated, “We want Eddie Howe as our head coach for as long as we can.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United’s co-owner, spoke out against his team’s troubles yesterday but separated himself from the boss’s decision-making process. He said, “I like Erik.” I believe he is an excellent coach, but it is ultimately not my decision.

“The management team that runs Manchester United must decide how to best run the team in a variety of ways.

“But the team that is running Manchester United has only been together since June or July.” [CEO] Omar [Berrada] and [sporting director] Dan Ashworth were not present in January, February, March, or April; they arrived in July.

“They have only been there…” They’ve only been there for a few weeks, so they need to assess the situation and make some sound judgements.

“Our objective is very clear – we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously – that’s very clear.”

Howe is under contract at Newcastle for at least another five years, with a seven-figure release clause.
