Chris Wilder has revealed Rhian Brewster could be set for a return to action imminently, having missed each of Sheffield United’s last four games.
Since joining the Blades from Liverpool in October 2020, the striker has had a string of terrible luck in terms of injuries and uneven play in front of goal. He was a promising signing, but injuries have marred his time at Sheffield United.
Brewster, who joined the club for a whopping £23.5 million, has recovered from injuries to play on a regular basis this season, mostly from the bench, but it’s clear that Wilder likes him and wants him to do well to get back on track, following an exciting start to the young striker’s career before joining the Blades.
However, the 24-year-old has struggled in front of goal, and while injuries have undoubtedly contributed, he will be bitterly upset with his lack of goals in a Sheffield United shirt since the switch.

Chris Wilder provides update on Rhian Brewster’s progress
Wilder has indicated that Brewster is “really close” to returning to first-team action after missing the Blades’ last four games. He has been dealing with hamstring troubles for the past few years, but the most recent muscle issue appears to be resolved.
Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Rhian is really near. I stated on Tuesday night that we must make a well-thought-out, reasonable decision with Rhian, taking into account his previous injury history.
Brewster is entering the final season of his contract at Bramall Lane and will be desperate to impress, whether it’s to secure a new contract with the Blades or to get the best contract possible elsewhere by finishing the season in good form and returning them to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
In his absence, Kieffer Moore and Tyrese Campbell have shared the effort up top this season, but both have recently suffered injuries that have limited their game time. Moore is still out for the match against Sunderland this evening.
“We don’t think Kieffer will make it. “He’ll be in a week,” Wilder continued. Campbell should continue to attack, but Brewster’s return should improve Sheffield United’s attacking options, which are now limited.
Rhian Brewster’s long-term future remains in doubt
There aren’t many players who deserve a lucky break more than Brewster does right now, and if he can start finding the back of the goal, they might see glimpses of the player who demanded such a high salary just four years ago.
At the present, it appears unlikely that Brewster will sign a new contract with Sheffield United, but Wilder believes that if he can gain confidence and string together a run of starts, he will be able to turn his career around and stay with the club.
The issue has been that, even when Brewster has been able to play, he has rarely made a significant contribution in a Blades jersey. His final goal for the club came in a 3-1 defeat to Stoke City in early October 2022.
He is unlikely to stay with Sheffield United beyond the conclusion of the season unless his fitness and form remain constant in the second half of the season.
