Brendan Rodgers comments on a difficult night in the Westfalenstadion, dismissing the idea of changing his approach to facing high-quality opponents in the Champions League.
“I do not feel anything. “I’m not really bothered, that’s my honest answer,” Brendan remarked during his media conference yesterday afternoon. “You cannot turn a tap on and off. I believe that if you study the game, you will notice that we were attempting to press the game in a static position and fall back into form. That did not meet our expectations for the evening.
“We play how we play, it’s the same plaudits that are commending our performances over the last number of months that allow us to get into this game with this incredible optimism that we can get a result,” the Liverpool manager added.
“You can’t just turn off the tap and tell everyone to play ultra defensive. It’s simply not how we play. So what should we do? Sit back, control 15% of the ball, and lose 3-0? 4-0? Over the last six months, we’ve seen opponents come to us and sit back, playing five at the back or 4-5-1 with no attacking options.
“Or do you play the way you do, knowing that you need to sharpen your fangs, be brighter, and move faster to close space? All of these activities are part of the learning process.
“I’d rather do that and go down with my own vision than listen to someone who has never coached, played, or whatever. “I respect people’s opinions, but I never listen to them,” the Celtic manager said.
Rodgers believes that if his team can eliminate those mistakes and make those adjustments, Celtic will be competitive in the Champions League against the great teams.
“That is the challenge.” As I already stated, I am not a dreamer. We want to be competitive, and I believe we shown in our first game that if we are at that level and do everything well, we will have an opportunity.
“There will be games that are difficult for us, but we will do our utmost to achieve the results that we desire. We’ll be judged at the end of January and see where the points total takes us, but I’m confident in the squad and how they’ve been working,” Brendan added.
“It was a sore one the other night, but as I mentioned, there’s a lot of criticism surrounding it and how you play. That has never worried me; we have a manner of functioning that stimulates and motivates our supporters.
“We will continue on that path, but you and I both know that we will recover to a stronger position than we were before the game.” Why? Because we’ll learn from it,” Brendan stated.
The Celtic manager also discussed how he lifts his players’ spirits after a night like that.
“I think it provides reassurance to all of the players. I’m fairly open about it; we don’t hide behind it and pretend it never occurred. We talk about and through it. The aim, of course, is to remain calm and composed while guiding the boys through the situation. Rodgers said, “It’s learning and growth, and it’s horrible at the time.”
“When you’re in that situation as a player, it’s difficult, but this group is incredibly resilient. We may lose games, but we will be remarkably resilient. That’s a hallmark of our squad; we demonstrated that last season and will do so again this season.
“We’ll just keep on our current path. “We believe in how we work and play, and we learn from games like the one the other night against top opposition,” the Celtic boss said.
