Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has acknowledged the need for a strong response following his team’s first defeat of the season, as they prepare to face Tottenham on Sunday. The Seagulls’ unbeaten run came to an end in a frenzy encounter with Chelsea, where they suffered a 4-2 loss, despite netting twice. Cole Palmer delivered a stunning performance by bagging all four goals for the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

While Hurzeler saw positives in Brighton’s attacking performance, he acknowledged that their defensive effort needed to be improved, especially given the possibility of losing Jan Paul van Hecke until late November. Hurzeler discussed the necessity of self-honesty following a loss, saying, “I think it’s really essential after a defeat that you are honest with yourself, that you reflect on what was good and what was not good in this game, and if you lose a game, of course there are more negative things.

“We analysed these negative points, we discussed with the team about that.” The manager highlighted the importance of improvement and a collaborative effort to recover: “We’re trying to find solutions, we’re trying to show a reaction as a team on Sunday, but there were also some positive things, especially in possession.”

“Chelsea scored four goals, and I believe we had four-goal chances as well, so we must learn from this. I need to learn from that because I was in charge of the match plan, and it was inadequate. Now we’re trying to show a reaction.” Finally, Hurzeler emphasized the team’s future defensive strategy: “It’s a priority for us to improve our collective defense. We’ve talked a lot about the high line, but it’s more of an active line. It is also the offensive players’ role to defend the lines so that opponents cannot simply break them and their players cannot play behind our line.”
