Gary Lineker says £17m Aston Villa player is one of the worlds best after Bayern Munich win.
On Wednesday night, Aston Villa supporters were sent into a state of pure bliss as they defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League.
Aston Villa flawlessly carried out their game plan on a night when Unai Emery served up a masterpiece in tactics and substitutions. It was an unforgettable one.
The Villans maintained their composure and, when presented with an opportunity, Emery’s team took advantage of the space Bayern had left behind by going on the counterattack, with Ollie Watkins wearing down Dayot Upamecano.
Then, in the 70th minute, Jhon Duran took over for Watkins, and he scored an incredible goal by lobbing the legendary Manuel Neuer.
Duran’s latest exceptional contribution from the bench saw him instantly steal the headlines and rightly so however, there was another player who deserved just as much, if not more praise.
Emi Martinez showed why he’s the world’s best after display vs Bayern Munich
To repel Bayern’s pressure and attempts on their goal, Villa needed Emili Martinez to be at the top of his game.
Martinez went above and beyond in Wednesday’s victory, earning praise from Alan Smith for being “world-class” during the tie with Ipswich Town.
The 32-year-old made numerous outstanding saves, but two stand out in particular: in the first half, he stopped Serge Gnabry’s looping attempt from the top corner, and in the last minute, he stopped Harry Kane’s point blank header.
After the game, Kane declared that his team could have played all night and yet not have been able to get past him because of how extraordinary he was.
Gary Lineker praised Martinez after the game, calling him one of the “great” goalkeepers in international football because of his “brilliant” performance.
“It was an excellent attempt. Lineker stated on the Rest Is Football podcast, “I know Martinez has made other saves in the game, but the one at the end, I mean, he has become one of the great goalkeepers in world football.”
He’s the master of the shithousery, so we speak about it, and I find it funny, but when it comes to his actual goalkeeping, I mean, it’s very, very uncommon that he makes a mistake.
He has demonstrated time and time again what an incredible presence he is one-on-one. Additionally, he’s
Martinez is the best in the world
Martinez is without a doubt the best goalkeeper on the planet, thus the argument about who the top goalkeepers in the world are should have come to an end a long time ago.
Villa acquired Martinez for £17 million from Arsenal in 2020. Martinez is one of the rare goalkeepers that can play like that on the greatest stage.
He is accustomed to producing outstanding performances under duress—he won the World Cup and the Copa America with his nation, after all. This was only his most recent example.
It would have been unimaginable four years ago to include Martinez in discussions with the greatest in the world.
But the seasoned stopper has solidified his position at the top, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
