Sold for £6.3m: Birmingham hit gold with ace who’s now worth millions less

Sold for £6.3m: Birmingham hit gold with ace who’s now worth millions less.

During the summer, Birmingham City gained a reputation for being extravagant spenders, and they approached League One much like

huge fish in a small pond.

Chris Davies’ team would eventually add sixteen new players, including Jay Stansfield, who returned to St Andrew’s for a whopping

£20 million after starring for the Blues on loan even amid their relegation struggles.

However, splashing the cash isn’t just reserved for this chapter in Birmingham’s story, with the West Midlands outfit prone to

splurging out excessive amounts when still competing in the second tier.

Sunjic’s transfer to Birmingham

Leaving his home Croatia for a fresh opportunity in England, Ivan Sunjic joined Birmingham as a big buy back in 2019, coming to the

Blues at a hefty £6.3 million cost.

When Sunjic left five years later, this deal would ultimately seem like a waste of money. Although the former Dinamo Zagreb player

occasionally displayed flashes of brilliance, he was always kept in check by playing for a Birmingham team that was always on the

verge of dropping to League One.

16 new faces would end up joining Chris Davies’ ever-growing camp, including one notable deal which saw Jay Stansfield return to St.

Andrew’s for an eye-watering £20m, after he lit up the Championship for the Blues on loan even during their relegation woes.

Sunjic’s transfer value in 2024

The statement Blues buy has seen his value collapse to £674k playing out in Cyprus, according to Football Transfers.

That’s a significant departure from the £6.3 million Birmingham spent on the midfield player in 2019. The third-tier giants are now regretting having to pay such a high price.

Across the course of his Birmingham stay, Sunjic saw his value fall more and more, with the 27-year-old worth just £1.6m last October, before moving on for nothing recently.

Davies’ team will be frustrated that they were unable to secure a transfer fee for Sunjic when he did leave the building, but in the meantime, Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-Ho have formed a strong central midfield partnership for the promotion-chasing team, so the loss of their former midfield dud hasn’t been felt at all.

A call-up to the South Korean national team has even been granted to Seung-Ho, as the driven Blues aim for an instant return to the Championship.

Birmingham’s extravagant expenditure appears to be justified, at least for the time being, as opposed to throwing money at players like Sunjic, who are already forgotten about at St. Andrew’s quarters.
