‘No longer a Lion, I’m a Tiger – new Hull City man eyeing Millwall success
Hull City’s youngsters will have a former Lion in their camp when they look for FA Youth Cup success this evening at Millwall.
Matt Beard, who captained the South London team to FA Youth Cup triumph in 1991, defeating Manchester United
along the way—a team that featured players like David Beckham, Gary Neville, and Paul Scholes—arrived at City on
the day the Tigers’ Under-18s were drawn against the Lions earlier this month.
Thirty-two years later, Beard, 50, will join David Meyler in the away dugout at The Den with the goal of leading City’s
youth into the competition’s fourth round.
“I started at Millwall when I was twelve,” Beard pointed out. “I led the team that won the FA Youth Cup with
Beckham, Butt, Scholes, and Neville after we defeated the Fergie Babes 2-1 at Old Trafford. It [Millwall] and that crew.
It’s going to be an amazing experience since on my first day of work here, the Youth Cup draw was announced, and
we got Millwall at The Den. I have informed the lads that I am now a Tiger and not a Lion.
Beard, who is working with academy head Richard Naylor and club legend David Meyler at the MKM Stadium, says he has been impressed by what he has seen thus far.
“I am so happy to be here; everyone has made me feel welcome and it has been a great start,” he added. “I was
fortunate enough to visit Hull in February since I spent several years working with the former manager, Liam
Rosenior, at Brighton, where I assisted him in launching his coaching career when he was a player. Before that three-
week time, I had only ever visited Hull to play football. I fell in love with the city, so I applied for the job when it
became available.
“I believe I can support Conor (Sellars) and Billy (Clarke) on their path as well because David (Meyler) is a terrific
coach despite being relatively early in his coaching career.
“The guys work really hard.” Every day, they desire to study. That is the most crucial factor, in my opinion as a coach
with fifteen years of experience. My job is made much easier by their demeanour, work ethic, and attitude.
