The bizarre meeting with David Murray that convinced Scott Brown to sign for Celtic and not Rangers

At Celtic, Scott Brown will always be remembered as a legend.

The new Ayr United manager led the team to a second straight nine-in-a-row, a Quadruple Treble, and an Invincibles Treble, making him maybe Celtic’s best captain since the illustrious Billy McNeill.

Throughout the course of his 14-year career, Brown—who is among Celtic’s most decorated players—made over 500 appearances for the club and won ten league crowns, six Scottish Cups, and seven League Cups.

Following his retirement, Scott Brown is currently having some success as a manager while still getting his start at Ayr. However, the Celtic icon shares a meeting he had with Rangers that helped him decide to sign a contract with Celtic back in 2007.

“I went and met Walter, Ally, and David Murray in a car park in Sighthill in Glasgow, underneath flats, sat in a Land Rover, and blethered away to them,” Brown said on the Let Me Be Frank podcast.

Then, unsurprisingly, Celtic called to request that I speak with them. Hibs had accepted the bid and they flew me to London to Dermot’s [Desmond] residence.

“I was thinking, this is a little better than Sighthill,” as I was looking.

Tommy Burns’s contribution in persuading Scott Brown to choose Celtic over Rangers

The former Celtic captain disclosed the letters Tommy sent him to entice him to the east end of Glasgow, thus the late, great Tommy Burns had a hand in Brown’s signing.

Brown went on, “I had a great relationship with Coisty and Walter. and spending that time in Scotland with Tam.

Tommy was messaging, “Wee man come home, you know, you want to come home, come to us, we’ll make sure you’re all right, we’ll build the team around you,” despite the fact that they were having a great time joking about.

“And Strachan and I clicked really well in terms of how we wanted to play; we wanted to center the squad around Aiden McGeady, myself, and all of the younger players who were present.

“So I just felt like it was the right place at the right time to go to a club that was in the Champions League that was competing all the time.

“And to be fair, we performed well in the first two seasons of the Champions League.”

Brown enjoyed countless successful European nights at Celtic beating the likes of AC Milan, Villareal and Benfica.

The former Celtic captain also enjoyed some great victories over Rangers during his time at the club with the 5-1 wins at Celtic Park and Ibrox during the Invincibles season being the most memorable of the lot.

Now chasing promotion to the Scottish Premiership with Ayr United, Brown may well see himself in the Celtic dugout soon enough but in the unfamiliar opposition side next season.
