Birmingham City now have one major advantage over Wrexham in the League One promotion race

Wrexham will face a tough battle trying to beat Birmingham City to the League One title this season.

When Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over the club in 2021, they probably didn’t anticipate Wrexham to have climbed the EFL ladder so far.
Phil Parkinson took over as manager of Wrexham in 2022, and he has since led the club to successive promotions.

And, after overcoming Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 on the first day, followed by excellent victories over Peterborough United and Reading, the Welsh side appeared to be on track for a third consecutive promotion.

The Red Dragons were top of League One heading into this past weekend’s games, competing with Tom Brady-owned Birmingham City.

However, Birmingham defeated Wrexham 3-1 earlier this month and now appear to be the League One title favourites.

Why Birmingham City have advantage over Wrexham in League One title race

Parkinson and his players have had a tough week, losing their past two League One games.

Wrexham drew 0-0 with Leyton Orient on Saturday, allowing Birmingham to overtake them at the summit.
The newly promoted side was expected to bounce back in midweek, but after falling down in the 10th minute, Wrexham lost 1-0 to Stevenage on Tuesday evening.

Brady’s Blues are now five points ahead of the Hollywood-owned team, with a game in hand.

One of the keys to Birmingham’s early-season success is that they are one of just three League One teams that have yet to lose an away game in 2024/25.

Wrexham must improve their poor away record to stay in League One title race

With Birmingham tumbling out of the Championship and paying out record sums in the summer, it was always going to be difficult to beat them to the league crown.

Wrexham, on the other hand, would have had a legitimate chance, and may still have one, if they improved their present terrible away record.

Wrexham had an exceptional home record, conceding only seven goals at the Racecourse Ground during the calendar year.

However, they have already dropped 10 points in five away games in 2024/25. This is despite the fact that at least two of the ties were easily won.

The 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers appeared to be a fine result at the time, but their recent form suggests Wrexham should have gotten more from the game.

Wrexham’s away form could cost them the League One crown this season, therefore they must start achieving better results on the road.

Their next away game is at Rotherham United on October 19th, and it is already looking like a must-win.
