Bayern Munich exec Max Eberl laments lack of movement off the ball in Champions League defeat to Aston Villa

Bayern Munich exec Max Eberl laments lack of movement off the ball in Champions League defeat to Aston Villa.

Bayern Munich played against a strong opponent who sat deep in defense to limit Bayern’s offensive spaces for the second straight game. The strategy proved effective as Emiliano Martínez made seven stops to help Aston Villa maintain the clean sheet.

Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern’s aerial attack thrived until this past week. Both on and off the ball, there has been inventiveness and continuous movement. But both those qualities disappeared against Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Max Eberl, director of sport at Bayern, “we had control for 15 or 20 minutes in the first half without being able to push them back much” (via @iMiaSanMia). “Today, we weren’t entirely engaged off the ball. We performed better, but not with many spectacular scoring opportunities, in the second half. We did more moving about. Our own goal was not really a chance to score. Following our defeat, we responded and were given two more opportunities by Serge [Gnabry] and Harry [Kane]. The game must not be lost. We cannot win at this level if we do not give it everything we have. We must learn from it. We didn’t manage to take advantage of our limited chances. We were aware that there were a lot on the line.”

Eberl is entirely correct in his analysis. Bayern needs to find a way to generate quality chances and execute those chances well given the possession difference.
