Kasper Schmeichel comments on Celtic’s tactical approach against Dortmund

Celtic custodian Kasper Schmeichel defended his team’s tactical approach against Borussia Dortmund, claiming that the Germans simply had a lucky break.

The Hoops were humiliated at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday evening, losing 7-1.

Emre Can, Karim Adeyemi, Serhou Guirassy, and Felix Nmecha scored goals to cap off a spectacular night for the hosts.

Dortmund’s merciless performance left Brendan Rodgers’ team vulnerable.

Celtic manager Rodgers suffered their fourth UEFA Champions League defeat with six or more goals surrendered.

Such a record is not to be proud of, and many have critiqued his approach to games against strong European opponents.

Schmeichel recently weighed in on the debate over the Bhoys’ tactical setup against elite opponents.

“There’s always a debate,” he explained (The Scottish Sun).

“However, that method has proven to be really effective for us this season. Sometimes you run into an opponent who has everything going for them.

“It was one of those outcomes that might occur every now and again.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of some of them as well. Sometimes it seems like everything the opposition throws at you goes in.

“They have the luck or the rub of the green to get this type of achievement. However, it is not one of those results that reflects our squad as a whole.

“We’ve had a great start to the season and need to remember that.

“We’ll just have to take it as it comes. It’s not who we are or have been.

“You have to accept the rough with the smooth. We’ve spent a lot of time on the other side this season.”

Schmeichel and his teammates will be anxious to recover ahead of their journey to the Highlands this weekend.

The Scottish Premiership champions travel to Ross County on Sunday at lunchtime, hoping to resume their winning ways.

Rodgers’ club has had an excellent start to the league season, winning six of six games, scoring 20 goals and allowing none.

Following a European disgrace, they must maintain their perfect record this weekend.
