Police holiday delaying Hill return to rugby, says Sale boss

Sale Sharks manager Alex Sanderson has expressed his displeasure that England lock Jonny Hill’s comeback to the team is being held up by police officers on vacation.

Hill is still under investigation more than four months after getting into an argument with a Bath fan following last season’s Premiership semi-final in June.

Sale is awaiting the outcome of that procedure before fielding Hill, although Sanderson stated that the club is aiming for a resolution as soon as possible.

“We have no clarity on Jonny with regards to the exact date he is going to return,” according to him.

“It’s still with the authorities, and we’ll have to wait for their decision. The person who should be dealing with it is on yearly leave.

“I have to take big breaths and understand that this situation is beyond mine and Jonny’s control at this moment.

“It’s not as if we’re not following up. We’ve had barristers on the case since the beginning. It’s basically a lengthy procedure that isn’t favorable to professional sports.”

Hill is accused of putting a Bath fan in a headlock and shattering his spectacles while celebrating the home team’s 31-23 victory in front of the Sale bench.

At the time, the club stated: “The Sale Sharks are aware of an incident involving a player and a Bath Rugby fan at the final whistle of today’s semi-final.

“The club will work with Bath Rugby to complete an investigation into the incident and will provide no further comment at this time.”

Sale host Gloucester in their third Premiership encounter of the season on Friday.
