A Lyon player criticizes Philippe Clement for calling the Rangers team “underdogs” before their match.

Corentin Tolisso, a midfielder for Lyon, has refuted Philippe Clement’s assertion that Lyon is the favorite versus Rangers on Thursday night due to their superior financial standing.

After their thrilling victory in Malmo last week, the Gers will try to carry their Europa League momentum back to Ibrox when Pierre Sage’s team pays them a visit first.

In an effort to support the theory that Lyon should win, Clement stated that a draw would be a “very, very good result” against the Ligue 1 heavyweights [BBC Sport, 2 October], highlighting certain financial differences between the clubs.

The Daily Record [2 October] cited 30-year-old Tolisso in response, who stated: “Rangers were in pot one [of the draw], like us. It’s about 50/50, in my opinion. By no means are the Rangers the underdogs, in my opinion.

“Both of our teams are large and competing at the same level. Although both of our campaigns got off to strong starts, Rangers will enjoy home advantage this week.

“They haven’t had the best start to the season like us, but we’re getting better and we want a big win.”
If Rangers defeat Lyon, they would rock Ibrox.

Rangers’ winning recipe appears to have been hit in recent weeks, victorious in each of their four matches since the Old Firm and the first international break.

Many supporters who are beginning to realize Clement’s team can grind out victories even when they are not at their best will be pleased that despite Sunday’s weak performance against Hibernian, they managed to win at Ibrox by a tight margin thanks to goals from Tom Lawrence and a penalty save by Jack Butland.

Ibrox, Rangers

In his pregame remarks, Tolisso mentioned the Govan noise as well. He said his teammates who played Lyon against the Gers in 2021 told him it was one of the “best atmospheres in a stadium you’ll ever find.”

Ibrox would go into meltdown if we win again on Thursday, which would further ignite a desperately needed run of good form.

In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi appears to have been given the terms of a second chance.
