The Chronicle reported earlier this week that Newcastle United dispatched a scout to watch an unknown Championship player in Coventry’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.
A few days later, the identity of the player in question was revealed, with The Mail’s Craig Hop stating that Coventry striker Norman Bassette is on the club’s recruitment radar.
Hope, dubbed the ‘next Viktor Gykokeres’ for his similar frame, movement, and skill set, as well as the fact that he’s catching the eye at Coventry, reveals that Newcastle scouts not only saw him score in last weekend’s draw with the Blades, but also at Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
Bassette earned his first cap for Belgium’s senior team earlier this month, coming off the bench in a UEFA Nations League match against Israel, after impressing in the second division following a £2.5 million summer transfer from Ligue 2 side Caen.
Newcastle are ‘keeping close eyes’ on his growth with the Sky Blues and will undoubtedly continue to do so following Frank Lampard’s arrival.
Whether we pursue the striker in future transfer windows or look for a slightly more senior option remains to be seen, but it’s no surprise that scouts are looking at forwards given Callum Wilson’s contract expires at the end of the season and he could leave on a free transfer.
