Martin explains why summer signing is out Southampton squad

Taylor, 31, spent seven years with Burnley and six seasons in the Premier League before joining the team on a free transfer in the summer.

He hasn’t played since the 3-2 loss to Leicester at home, and he has only made five appearances for Saints, playing 90 minutes twice before losing his spot.

We recognize that this is not the case, but some fans have implied that Taylor might have been the offender Martin was pointing the finger at.

Although Taylor sustained a niggle during his 45 minutes of action for the under-21s in October, Martin acknowledges that his prolonged absence is not because of his fitness.

“We’ve changed shape, which probably hasn’t helped Charlie and Kyle Walker-Peters has played so well on the left,” he told the Daily Echo.

Charlie has had a tough time, but he is an excellent teammate, so we must simply strive to be prepared for when we need him.

“We’re going to need everyone and if he doesn’t play at all between now and whenever then it’ll be another conversation,” Martin said.

“But he’s trained brilliantly, a brilliant pro, a brilliant person so he’ll just be a bit frustrated at the minute that he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked.”

Full-backs Ryan Manning and Kyle Walker-Peters’ futures were uncertain when Taylor signed a two-year contract with St. Mary’s this summer.
