About 40 firefighters responded to a fire as smoke was visible sweeping across the city’s skyline.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported a fire at two buildings at 07:43 GMT. Six fire engines were dispatched, and the fire was brought under control two hours later, according to the brigade. According to the LFB, an investigation into the fire’s cause has commenced.
According to Alec McNally, station commander of the LFB, workers were summoned to a two-building fire this morning. “[They] had to put out a fire that had developed onto an atrium-style conservatory, which was towards the roof of the building.” He said that the fire was now under control, and that firemen had rescued one adult and taken him to the hospital with “mild smoke inhalation”. The brigade advised residents to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed to avoid smoke.
BBC reporter Gem O’Reilly, who was on the scene, described the smoke as “horrendous” and “like burning chemicals”.
One local resident described the scent as “toxic and acrid.” The London Ambulance Service said that the first paramedic arrived at the location less than two minutes after the emergency alert was issued.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team,” according to a representative. “We treated one patient at the scene and took her to hospital.”
The LFB reported that half of the ground floor of the structure was on fire, and the brigade utilised one of its 32m turntable ladders to attack the fire from above.
Crews from Soho, Euston, Islington, and adjacent fire stations were on the scene. On Thursday afternoon, the LFB reported that one fire engine and a fire investigation unit remained on the scene. The LFB stated that the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
