Jimmy Thelin: Aberdeen must focus on league now Hampden place is secure.
The Dons manager is looking forward to the Scottish Cup final four after defeating Queen’s Park. A double from Oday Dabbagh, an imaginative finish from Kevin Nisbet, and a goal from Graeme Shinnie in his 600th game helped the Dons defeat Queen’s Park 4-1 and secure a spot in the competition’s final four. That means a trip to the national stadium in April, and a chance to get one step closer to cutlery. Thelin admitted he was enthusiastic about the potential, but highlighted that the competitive nature of the Premiership, with only three points separating third-placed Hibs, fourth-placed Aberdeen, and fifth-placed Dundee United, meant the focus needed to shift soon.
“It’s good to have it there in the future to look forward to and it’s going be a big game,” Thelin told reporters. “Everybody wants to be at Hampden to compete for a final spot and win something. So that’s the first part. It also helps since the last time we played Queen Park, we won 1-0 in the final minute. “So we had no idea before this game, so I’m glad we scored the goals and were very stable today, and they deserve a semi-final spot – let’s see who they face – and, of course, when you go to the semi-finals, you think about the final.”But now we have to focus on the league first because it’s so tight in the table, but when we are in the semi-finals, of course we have to try to win and reach the final.” Thelin was encouraged with his team’s ability to recover from a rough start and gel despite changes to the starting lineup. “The first five minutes, we were a little bit unstable and they created some opportunities from the crosses,” stated the player. “But during the first half we get more and more connections, they found the rhythm and we get more and more stable and did a good job as a team with an important win.”
Callum Davidson, Queen’s Park manager, had orchestrated a victory over Rangers at Ibrox to get his club to this point, but he thought his side’s hopes began to dwindle when Adam Montgomery reported injured in the morning, and he later lost Nikola Ijdur. “The first 20 minutes we were in the game,” he recalled. “We had several opportunities, but the little things are crucial. They score from a set piece; we don’t play percentage football, therefore it’s 2-0. “They gained confidence, and we struggled for the next 20 minutes, until they scored the fourth goal. “I lost Adam Montgomery to a calf injury this morning, another left back, and Nikola Ujdur was forced to leave.
“If were to beat Aberdeen these little things had to go for us and they didn’t today.”
