West Brom write to EFL over fan’s death at Sheffield Wednesday game

In a letter to the EFL, West Bromwich Albion requested that it look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a fan during

Saturday’s Championship match at Sheffield Wednesday.

In the stands, Mark Townsend, 57, suffered a medical emergency and passed away. Many West Brom supporters who were present

during the game have expressed disapproval of the incident’s circumstances, especially the length of time it took Townsend to get

medical attention.

Albion has written to the league expressing their concerns and has stated that they will cooperate with Sheffield Wednesday, who are

carrying out their own inquiry. It is known that they think an accurate account of what happened will require a coroner’s inquest.

In a post on X, Townsend’s brother Steve said that his brother’s passing had “truly broken” his heart and that it had taken the

paramedics fifteen minutes to get to the top tier of the West Stand, where the visiting fans are positioned. Townsend added, “I had to

break the news to my parents and his wife. My son is left with those memories, having watched my brother pass away and lose an

uncle.”

When on-site medical services failed to respond promptly, a West Brom supporter who was also an off-duty paramedic tried to

perform CPR on TownsendOther complaints from the supporters included the lack of an easily accessible defibrillator and the

officials’ inability to stop the game so that medical assistance could be provided more swiftly. The Guardian has contacted the

Yorkshire Ambulance Service to get a statement.

“First and foremost, the thoughts of everyone at Sheffield Wednesday remain with the loved ones of Mr. Townsend and the wider West

Bromwich Albion community,” a Sheffield Wednesday spokeswoman stated.

“The club is in continuous communication with West Bromwich Albion and other pertinent stakeholders as we work together to

determine the complete circumstances surrounding this awful death. We wholeheartedly support West Bromwich Albion’s desire that

Mr. Townsend’s family be given the opportunity to grieve in private.

West Brom has announced that there would be a memorial service for Townsend on Tuesday night when the team plays
