“£25m to £30m” – Watford FC: A prime Troy Deeney’s worth in current market debated

“£25m to £30m” – Watford FC: A prime Troy Deeney’s worth in the current market is debated.

After joining the team in 2010, Troy Deeney went on to become a Watford icon throughout his 11 prosperous years at Vicarage Road, where he scored goals in the Championship and Premier League on a regular basis.

Deeney came to the Hornets from Walsall in 2010, and during his five seasons in the English Premier League, he contributed significantly to the team’s success.

Deeney was frequently the target of transfer interest from other teams due to his excellent goal-scoring ability. However, he chose to stay at Vicarage Road during his prime years, signing a free transfer to childhood team Birmingham City in the summer of 2021 after his contract was terminated a year early.

Following the Hornets’ 2020 relegation, Spurs, West Brom, and Fenerbache expressed interest in the former striker, who also reportedly turned down a move to Arsenal in 2016. In addition, Deeney alleges that Leicester City made a $30 million offer for the player in 2016.

Troy Deeney valuation claim made

We asked Justin Beattie, our Hornets fan pundit, what the striker’s worth would have been at Vicarage Road in his prime, considering the transfer interest Deeney got from some elite clubs while he was at Watford.

“He was priceless to Watford in terms of what he was worth,” Justin stated in an interview with Football League World.

“He gave us more of the best years at Vicarage Road than any one player has ever had, and the fans still hold him in the highest regard.

“The fact we paid £500k for him, we got more than enough for him.

“I couldn’t put a price on him, but in his prime right now, you’re looking at a striker who was putting up 20+ goals a season for a while; they’re pretty rare, especially in the Championship, so if I had to guess, I’d say somewhere between £25 and £30 million.”

Troy Deeney will go down as a Watford legend

With 140 goals in 419 Watford appearances, it’s understandable why Deeney is regarded so highly at Vicarage Road.

Nobody could have predicted that a £500k acquisition from Walsall would have such a significant influence, and it wasn’t shocking that so many major teams were interested in him given his 47 Premier League goals for the Hornets.

Troy Deeney’s time at Watford – Transfermarkt
Season Division P G A
2010/11 Championship 40 3 4
2011/12 Championship 46 12 5
2012/13 Championship 43 20 10
2013/14 Championship 48 25 5
2014/15 Championship 43 21 10
2015/16 Premier League 43 15 10
2016/17 Premier League 40 10 5
2017/18 Premier League 31 6 3
2018/19 Premier League 37 11 5
2019/20 Premier League 27 10 2
2020/21 Championship 19 7 3
2021/22 Premier League 2 0 0

Justin’s £30 million sentence isn’t unfair, given how brilliantly he performed in the Premier League and the Championship, and it seems that Leicester City was prepared to pay that much to entice him to the King Power Stadium in 2016.

Deeney stuck with the team through several rumors of his leaving Vicarage Road, and he assisted them in their first-ever promotion back to the top division following their relegation in 2020.

From iconic events like the FA Cup final in 2019 and the play-off semi-final against Leicester City, Deeney will always be remembered with love by the Vicarage Road supporters and will go down as a club legend.
