Not just Kristensen: 49ers must sell Leeds flop who’s cost £525k-per-game
Prior to their return to the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022–2023 season, Leeds United was expected to lose a number of players.
After failing to keep the team from falling into the second division, Tyler Adams, who had been at Elland Road for a year, left to sign a £20 million contract with Bournemouth.
In addition to leaving Yorkshire after scoring 28 goals for the Whites over three years, Spanish forward Rodrigo moved to Al-Rayyan in Qatar when they activated his £3 million relegation clause.
Such departures were inevitable, raising funds but also clearing somewhat of the wage bill, something which was vital to avoid any form of financial breach after dropping down a division.
One other player departed on loan during the aforementioned window, with the former first-team star now looking set for a permanent move away from the club this summer.
Rasmus Kristensen’s stats for Leeds United
In the summer of 2022, Danish full-back Rasmus Kristensen signed a contract worth approximately £10 million with Leeds in an attempt to improve the defensive unit.
But even though he made 32 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals, it wasn’t enough to keep the team from dropping into the Championship, and the defender ended up going on loan.
He would subsequently join Roma for the entirety of last season before linking up with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on another temporary spell for the ongoing campaign.
It’s emerged in recent days that the German side are set to purchase the 27-year-old permanently at the end of the season for a fee in the region of £6.7m, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
It’s safe to say the Whites have conducted excellent business in offloading the full-back, with the 49ers needing to make sure another one of their Premier League additions follows him out of the door in the coming months.
The player who’s cost Leeds £525k per appearance
Over the years, Leeds have spent heavily to try and become an established top-flight outfit once again, but more importantly have also conducted shrewd business in offloading players.
The hierarchy’s outstanding efforts in the market are highlighted by Georginio Rutter, who arrived during the Premier League stint but still turned a profit following his performances in the second division.
If Max Wober were to leave at the conclusion of the season, manager Daniel Farke would probably not be able to say the same about him.
