Sunderland’s captain Dan Neil spoke out after the Watford game on Saturday in the Championship.

Sunderland’s skipper Dan Neil took responsibility for his costly error against Watford on Saturday.

The 22-year-old started in the midfield for head coach Régis Le Bris as the Black Cats lost 2-1 at Vicarage Road in the league over the weekend in front of about 2,000 traveling supporters.

Festy Ebosele gave Watford the lead in the first half, but Wilson Isidor equalised for Sunderland after turning in Patrick Roberts’ brilliant cross after 48 minutes.

With the game going toward a draw, Dan Neil conceded a penalty, which Tom Dele-Bashiru converted. The Black Cats lost away from home following a recent victory against Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light. The goal was the decisive factor.

“I thought we started a little slow for the first 15-20 minutes, but then we made a slight tactical adjustment and we kind of figured it out,” Neil told Sunderland’s social media outlets following the game against Watford.

He kept going: “I thought the last 10 minutes of the first half and the whole of the second half, we were really good and we were the better team.”

Neil commented on handing away the penalty, saying, “Obviously, simply a stupid error. A lack of concentration lost us the game, but I believe we can take a lot of positives from the second half and carry them into Tuesday to rebound.

Neil added: “Obviously, we got the early goal and were trying our hardest to grab the second, but as I already stated, a stupid mistake in my own box certainly lost us that game. As previously stated, we must take the positives from the second half and carry them forward into Tuesday.

“There were some positives from the game. Fortunately, it is a short turnaround. So we’ll still watch it back to see what we might have done better, particularly in the first 10, 15, and 20 minutes. Take a look at it and see what we can improve. Put this one to rest, and maybe we’ll be able to take three points on Tuesday night.”
