Viktor Gyokeres sends two-word message as Man United and Ruben Amorim receive transfer reminder
On Monday night, Viktor Gyokeres scored two goals as Sporting CP defeated Estoril, reminding Manchester United of what they are lacking.
Due to injury, the striker has been in and out of the lineup recently, but he has since found his form, scoring three goals in two and a half games. In 45 appearances this season, the Sweden international has already scored 46 goals for both club and country.
At the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Gyokeres scored the most recent of those from the penalty spot in the 96th minute, converting from 12 yards out to give Sporting a 3-1 victory. He quickly sent out a message to his millions of social media fans.
Gyokeres uploaded a picture from the Estoril game to his Instagram story, writing, “Let’s go,” with a lion emoji to punctuate it. Sporting is known as Leões (Lions). Just twenty-four hours after United lost a shootout to Fulham at Old Trafford and were eliminated from the FA Cup in the fifth round, the striker scored his 28th career penalty (out of 32 taken).
Two months after hitting the game-winning penalty kick in United’s shootout with Arsenal in the third round, Joshua Zirkzee missed the fifth and final one. Following the game, the Netherlands international shared on social media, just like Gyokeres.
“I apologize for disappointing you tonight, Reds! With a red heart emoji, he tweeted, “Thanks for the amazing support.”
However, with just one goal in his past 16 games—the equalizer against Leicester City in the fourth round—Zirkzee remains the team’s most productive center striker. This is due to the fact that after scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the middle of December, Rasmus Hojlund has gone 18 games without scoring.
Gyokeres keeps bringing up United’s need for a striker this summer. Following four months of conjecture on a potential reunion with Ruben Amorim following the Reds’ employment of his former head coach, the disparity between his current and previous alternatives up front is still as pronounced as ever.
