Sheffield Wednesday’s late winner defeated the Baggies.
Carlos Corberan, the manager of West Brom, acknowledged that it hurt to watch his team’s perfect start to the Championship season come to an end.
Even though the Baggies tied the game at halftime after trailing by two goals, they lost 3-2 on Wednesday in Sheffield.
Darnell Furlong’s own goal and Josh Windass’ header were negated by Josh Maja and Alex Mowatt’s efforts, but Anthony Musaba, a replacement, scored the game’s winning goal in the 86th minute to sentence Corberan’s team to defeat.
Corberan said: “The level of pain that I have or my players have now is huge, because of course it’s the first defeat.” Corberan believed his team showed too much “respect” to their opponents.
“We wanted to maintain the team’s momentum, but you cannot be thinking that you will win the championship without losing.”
“I believe we played too respectfully, and I need to figure out why we behaved that way—too respectfully or not good enough—because as a team we performed below our abilities. Thus, we must always analyze the causes and come up with answers.
“By not displaying your level, you give the opposition the chance to defeat you, as they were playing the game we anticipated them to play—pressing and putting balls in behind. We mishandled the circumstances in general, but we mishandled the attack towards the conclusion of the game in particular.
“We had a few chances to score goals. I believe that we had a terrific opportunity with Karlan Grant, and the goalie made an excellent save.
“I saw my team and we saw ourselves in the second half, and when we play at our level, we can control the games.”
“The most crucial thing I can advise my players to do today is to play with style on the field and not waste any football minutes.”
Wednesday’s manager, Danny Rohl, commended his team’s performance but acknowledged that the win—their first in the league since the first day of the season—was merely a “small step” ahead.
“I think overall, against a really strong side, our performance today was a good performance,” Rohl stated.
As a squad, we played very compact defense. Our three goals were all outstanding.
Just a little step for me today. We want to score points consistently, but I think it’s more vital to execute well every time. This indicates that it won’t be 50, 60, or 78 minutes like it was against Luton.
Again today, there were brief moments when we faltered, but we soon recovered.
“As a minimum, we require 100%; after that, we are able to accept something, but this has been the case for the past few weeks.
We lost a few opportunities at 2-0. We might have easily won 3-0 or 4-0. The game is then done. We declined to take them.
“And then, you know, at 2-1, they always have so much quality and it’s always close. They are atop the table because of this. In retrospect, it appears that they didn’t require as many opportunities to score.
All things considered, we require a team effort every day and every weekend. It all comes down to the team. The message today was very clear: team first. We wouldn’t be able to win games without the team.
