Fabrizio Romano drops Viktor Gyokeres, Man Utd update that will interest Coventry City

This summer, a number of footballing giants are anticipated to chase the 26-year-old Swedish goal scorer, making him one of the most sought-after players in the globe.

Coventry City, who stand to gain from the sale of Gyokeres’ services through their sell-on clause, will undoubtedly be interested in this.

Ahead of the summer transfer season, Italian transfer guru Romano provided an update on Gyokeres’ status via GiveMeSport, and it will thrill more people than simply Coventry.

According to Romano, even though Gyokeres has a €100 million (£83.3 million) release clause at Sporting, the forward and the club’s management have reached a gentleman’s agreement that he can leave for less this summer because he will be staying for another year despite his 2023–24 performances. Sporting is reportedly willing to let Gyokeres go for between €65 million and €70 million (£54.2 million–£58.3 million), with add-ons expected to support that amount.

Viktor Gyokeres’ Sporting CP Stats 2024-25 – As Per Transfermarkt
Competition Appearances Goals Assists
Liga Portugal 23 25 5
UEFA Champions League 8 6 0
Taça de Portugal 4 2 2
Allianz Cup 3 4 0
Supertaça 1 0 2

Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, wants to bring Gyokeres back to Old Trafford because he was in charge of Sporting when he joined the team in 2023. However, their pursuit of teammate Geovany Quenda may mean that the Red Devils do not have enough money to make a deal; other football greats may, however, show interest. Gyokeres has been on the rise since leaving Coventry in 2023, scoring 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions in his debut season, and he is having an equally successful run in 2024–25, scoring 37 goals in 39 games.

According to CoventryLive, Sporting paid the Sky Blues a total of £20 million after triggering add-ons last season, but this also decreased the sell-on clause to 10% of any future profit from Gyokeres’ sale. If the Swedish striker sells for the reported £54.2 million–£58.3 million, Coventry will receive an additional £3.42 million–£38.3 million because Sporting won £34.2 million–£38.3 million from the gentleman’s agreement.
